Libyan revolution >>

March-August 2011.

Following the uprising in neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia, Libyan civilians orchestrated a massive uprising against the 42 years-old reign of strongman Muammar Gaddafi. What began as simple protests, erupted into one of the most violent and long lasting uprisings of the Arab Spring movement, blossoming into a civil war that has embroiled the United States, NATO, and the International Criminal Court.

After 8 months, the rebel militias of various cities and regions combined their power to overwhelm the Gaddafi loyalist forces protecting Tripoli, and drove the embattled dictator from his powerbase and to his death.
